RIESLING
"Crisply, dryly floral with a real aromatic intensity, this wine [Hope Vineyard] is invariably one of the finest Rieslings in the country in any vintage." Kieth Stewart, The Great Wines of New Zealand 2005
I love the versatility of this variety and over the years have produced Rieslings in a number of differing styles.
On occasions when conditions have been favourable, we've made sweet, late harvest and botrytis styles, the last in 2006. But in the first instance, it is purity of fruit we look for in our two single vineyard Rieslings. Healthy, clean fruit with minimal botrytis influence. Thus unencumbered, they most clearly express a sense of the place from which the have come.
The off-dry Hope Riesling grown on the clay loam gravels of the home vineyard is the more powerful, intensely flavoured wine expressing incisive, zesty, lemon, lime citrus fruits. From the heavier Moutere clays, the Apple Valley uncannily abounds with red and green apple flavours. It is lower in alcohol, juicy-sweet on the front and mouth-wateringly fresh to finish.
